Secrets, conventions, mysteries

A working frame for where insight comes from, and why most of it hides in plain sight.

The three buckets

A convention is what everyone already agrees on. A mystery is what nobody can know. A secret sits between them: a truth that is knowable but not yet widely known.[1] Progress comes almost entirely from secrets.

Why secrets persist

Secrets survive because incentives, taboos, and plain inattention keep people from looking. The world is not out of hard problems; it is out of people willing to search the unglamorous middle.

How we operate

We treat every dispatch as a hunt for a secret: something a careful reader can verify, that the consensus has not yet priced in.[2] When a secret becomes convention, we retire the page and move on.
